Coping with Election Anxiety: A Practical Guide

Today is a significant day in the U.S. as millions of Americans exercise their right to vote for the next president. With an estimated 150,000,000 ballots set to be cast, the anticipation and tension surrounding this momentous event have reached a peak for many.

It is crucial to acknowledge that anxiety often stems from apprehension about future events. Our minds are wired to predict various outcomes, and the uncertainty of the election results can cause our thoughts to spiral into a cycle of worst-case scenarios. This mental energy, fueled by the "what-if" scenarios, only serves to escalate our worries.

Similar to revving an engine in neutral, our amygdala triggers a fear response that propels us into a cycle of anticipating increasingly dire consequences. However, there are steps we can take to manage these heightened emotions.

First and foremost, pause and take three intentional, deep breaths to ground yourself in the present moment.

Next, remind yourself that the scenarios causing your anxiety are speculative and may not come to fruition. Even if they do, reality may not be as bleak as your imagination paints it.

Embrace your resilience by reflecting on past challenges you have conquered, reassuring yourself that you have the strength to navigate through this uncertainty.

Engage in productive actions like going for a walk or connecting with loved ones to release the pent-up adrenaline triggered by the fight-or-flight response.

Consider setting your phone on "Do Not Disturb" after casting your vote and focus on accomplishing a goal for the day that is separate from election-related news. In the midst of a chaotic election cycle inundated with a deluge of information from various sources, it is essential to take a break and protect your mental well-being.

Lastly, practice gratitude by acknowledging the people and things in your life that bring you joy and comfort. Gratitude serves as a powerful antidote to anxiety by shifting your focus to the positive aspects of your life.

If anxiety continues to overwhelm you and hinder your daily activities, do not hesitate to seek support. Remember that you are not alone in navigating these emotions, and together, we can discover strategies to overcome these challenges.
